NBA POWER RANKINGS - WEEK 16

 

Word up playaz! I'm back from my honeymoon and I am ready to start blogging again!  The Cavs are still atop of our rankings, barely, even after losing three games last week.  Will the trade the Cavs made propel them to the Finals, or did it ruin their chemistry they had going?  Amar (of Cavalier Attitude fame) and myself (Docksquad) are doing this week's rankings...

Tip-Off:

1. (1) Cleveland Cavaliers (43-14)

• Wow, a team that ripped off 13 straight wins against some impressive competition and then made a trade to indisputably get better is suddenly vulnerable? With Z gone (for 30 days), Jamison coming in, and Mo Williams returning from a shoulder injury, Mike Brown is in experiment mode with his rotations. Once he gets it figured out and Jamison gets settled in, it's going to take a Herculean effort for someone to beat Cleveland in a seven-game series. (AP)

This has been a tough year for basketball fans, particularly for followers of the Knicks, and more particularly for those that gamble. This is not because the games have been any more (or less) dreadful than they have been in the previous two, three, or ten seasons, but rather because the prospect of signing a premium free agent looms unspoken over everything that happens this year, like a vulture gliding over the Arizona skies for carrion.

Can we get Bron? Can we get Wade? Does Amare like New York? What about Bosh?

USA VS CANADA - BLACKHAWKS VS BLACKHAWKS - by Vish

Wow! What an intense hockey game between USA and Canada. So much action from beginning to end. The biggest highlight was the goal-tending of USA goalie, Ryan Miller, who came up big in the 3rd period. He was able to stop 42 of 45 shots, most which were in traffic (including the final barrage of shots towards the final minutes of the game). Very impressive, especially when you are going against an amazing goalie by the name of Martin Brodeur.

However, there was another amazing attribute to this game... the Blackhawk representation. The Canadian side saw assists on all 3 goals by a Blackhawk. Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook each contributed an assist, while Jonathan Toews recorded 2 in an impressive effort. From the American side, Patrick Kane dazzled with some amazing puck handling, although he did not record any points.

The Cavs and Amar'e Stoudemire: Shades Of The Lakers Getting Pau Gasol? By Amar Panchmatia

This past weekend's All-Star Game and associated activities in Dallas were just fun and games. But the league's best team -- at least record-wise -- isn't messing around.

Reports surfaced on late Saturday night, as most NBA and even sports fans know by now, that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns were advancing very, very far in their talks that could send five-time NBA All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire to the Cavs in return for rising star J.J. Hickson and veteran Zydrunas Ilgauskas. The Cavaliers, as you know, possess the league's best record (43-11) and player (LeBron James), and this would be a classic case of the rich getting richer.

Honeymoons have forced this bachelor to do this week's power rankings. Results and records are through Tuesday, February 9th. I'll limit the homerism for the top-ranked team for what seems like the seventh or eighth week in a row. (Who's counting?)

1. (1) Cleveland Cavaliers (42-11)

• I feel sorry for anyone who thought that the Cavs were giving a maximum effort on Tuesday night against the Nets. The Cavs did just enough to dispatch the league's worst team for their 12th straight win while making movies in the process. As good as last year's 66-16 Cavs team looks, this year's crew seems like it would run circles around the 2008-09 squad.

Colts -4.5

I've gone back and forth a few times on this one.  And with my real money I'll probably be doing a Saints/Over teaser.  But for my pick, I'll take the Colts.  When the game was first decided, I thought the Colts would romp.  Peyton is on another planet right now.  He is playing for the title of greatest QB of this generation with this Super Bowl, but maybe of all-time.  Yes, Brady will still have more titles, but its different situations.  It'll be neck and neck at the least if Peyton wins this one.  Then the Freeney injury was announced, and everyone seemed to hop off the Colts bandwagon.  The Saints are a special team too.  But I just can't do it.  I can't pick against Manning in this game.  If the Colts defense is average because of the Freeney injury, then all that means to me is that Manning will amp his game up that much more and dominate.  I'll take the Colts 34 Saints 27, and Manning taking his place amongst the goats.

NATIONAL SIGNING DAY...WHY DO PEOPLE CARE? by Suman V & Mayank M

Outside of Dateline NBC you won’t find grown men watching and tracking teenage boys as much as college football recruiting fiends do.  The gross part is that it is as much of an addiction to recruiting fiends as it is to child predators.  And both groups can cross the line.  We won’t get into how a pedophile operates, but when a grown college football fan starts using Twitter to verbally assault a 17-year-old boy who chooses school X over his alma mater…well…. you may need to get Chris Hansen on the phone.  And that may be a sign that National Signing Day (NSD) has evolved into it’s own event.  We will try to place NSD into prospective for the uninformed, and later on we have a first hand account of what the recruiting process and NSD was like for a top recruit from the Midwest a few years ago.

The strong field reflects the strength of the course. Riviera, one of George Thomas’ greatest creations, is in everyone’s top five courses on the PGA Tour. The sign of a good course, too me, is how well one remembers the holes. If you play a mediocre track many holes go unnoticed, at Riviera you pick a number for player or caddy and they will immediately draw the perfect picture of that hole. Eighteen is, bar none, the best inland finishing hole and the variety of holes challenges every club in the bag while creating decisions which dare the mind.

• Here's something scary if you're a Cavs hater: these guys have their next six games at home and won't even have to leave The Q until after the All-Star break. Scarier part: that's around the time they'll expect to get Mo Williams back. Scariest part: that will also be after the trade deadline, and based on GM Danny Ferry's activity around the league, you can expect a big name to join the Cavs by then. Sorry. (AP)

For Cleveland Cavaliers, Trade Deadline Is for More Than Just this Year - by Amar Panchmatia

Count me in as one of those who laugh at the notion that LeBron James needs a "bigger market" than Cleveland to accomplish all of his ambitions—both on the court and off it.

But do not count me in as one of those who believes that James' re-signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers is all but a foregone conclusion. That would be just as absurd as suggesting that the size of the city, especially in today's day and age, has anything to do with it.
