The X-Factor? Intangibles by CK

Too many times throughout sports, we see teams that have everything they need in place, but just cannot get over the hump to victory. Whether you look at a long-term struggling team like the Raiders who year in and year out have top draft picks, but continue to assure themselves of another top position the following draft or a short-term obstacle team like the Yankees, before this year, who kept spending money only to have post-season disappointment. So what is it about the NBA, that has the smallest roster of all major sports (and least amount of spots to fill), that has so many teams struggle year in and year out as we continue to see the big dogs dominate, Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, etc?

DERRICK ROSE'S DUNK AND CROSSOVER VS THE THUNDER

The Bulls won their fourth game in a row tonight, and they were led by none other than our main man Derrick Rose.  Rose finished with 26 points and 7 assists, and two really nasty highlights.  Check them out below...

First his dunk at the end of the game.  Check out Harden and Westbrook's faces on this dunk.  You know they had Rose's last dunk on their minds.  They both said no to being in a poster...

Also, check out DRose's nasty cross on Thabo.  Sorry Thabo, we miss you here, but you better check them ankles son...

GO DROSE! GO BULLS!!!

Thanks for the videos Iverson..

FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN - REVIEW AND PREDICTIONS

Mark's Kaddy Korner Review - by Mark Huber

San Diego may be a top tourist destination with Torrey Pines perched high on the public course list but it's not a favorite stop for caddies. Over the years it's been a tough walk in sloppy conditions and the temperature can be 40 degrees with howling winds along the South course coast while sunny and warm on the North course. It's a tough place to pull a club and find a sprinkler head, they never bothered putting numbers on the heads and the circling winds, heavy air, and subtle elevation changes leave many Titleists great distances from the target. Foreign caddies often skipped this venue because the INS agents would visit Torrey Pine checking work visas and a few loopers lacking proper papers spent some time at the CrossBar Motel. Rumor has it some disgruntled local caddies phoned immigration prior to the tournament.

KIM KARDASHIAN HAITI FUNDRAISING EVENT - by Rahul P

Cleveland, OH - It was a night to remember at the Barley House on West Sixth Street. After an action packed battle between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, the stars aligned for a good cause. Kim Kardashian (of Keeping Up With the Kardashians fame) and the Troy Smith Foundation put on an event to benefit our brothers and sisters in Haiti, who are trying to recover from the effects of the massive earthquake last week.

Alongside Kim and Troy were Glenville Tarblooder legend, Ted Ginn Jr. and Cleveland Indians Pitcher, Jensen Lewis to support the fundraiser.

We got a chance to catch up with a few of them on the red carpet.  Everyone was really nice and took some time out to talk, which was great...

Ted Ginn Jr. said he wanted to come out to the Event and support the cause for Kim and his boy, Troy Smith.

Kim said she was sad that the Lakers lost, that she hoped the Saints win on Sunday, and that she just wanted to do her part for the people of Haiti.  Her heart goes out to them.

All in all, it was a great Event, and a great night.  Everyone had a great time, and the Event raised a ton of money for Charity.  Our hats go off to Kim and Troy on hosting such a great Event.

Check out these pictures from the Event...

We here at DSS ask that you please do your part to support the relief efforts in Haiti.  Check out some great ways on how you can contribute too.

Also, be sure to check out the Barley House during your next visit to Cleveland!

STONE COLD LEAD PIPE DOCKS - PLAYOFF EDITION

Suman's Pix:
(Last Week 3-1)
(Overall 53-40-2)

Jets +8 (bought hook)
I don't think Peyton Manning loses this game. However, I think the Jets have the recipe to keep this game close: a ball control offense, a stout defense, a shutdown DB to guard Reggie Wayne, and a ballsy coach. I think the Colts are smart enough to move Wayne around so he won't be shut out by Revis, but they still need someone else to step up. On the other hand, I don't think the Jets are good enough on offense where the Sanchise can just put up a '00 Dilfer type effort and expect to win. He'll have to make plays. Remember the last time these 2 teams played the Jets looked like garbage. My guess is that he does make a few plays, and the Jets make this interesting.

Saints -3 (bought hook)
I don't care what anyone says... Nobody knows what will happen in this game. It's impossible to predict. These 2 teams are nearly identical. How will the health of Harvin and Shockey affect the game? I don't know. No point in breaking this game down, so I'll just the team that had the most dominating performances of any team during the regular season IMO. Favre will look dumb with his pants on the ground, and Drew Brees will vault into household name status.

IP's Pix:
(Last Week 2-2
(Overall 44-37-5)

Colts -8

Its been a nice ride for the Jets, they have stepped up and player great thus far, but it ends in Indy. Peyton Manning will be surgical with the football and get them off to an ealy lead. Then look for Mathis and Freeney to go buck wild. Colts on their way to Miami. Indy by 10

Saint (-3)
Drew Brees, SuperDome, Kim Kardashian. Too much emotion and too much talent in the Big Easy for the Vikings. This one is going to be ugly. Saints by 14.

Vik's Pix:
(Last Week 2-2)
(Overall 38-40-1)

Jets +8
Rex Ryan D's usually do well vs Peyton. I see Revis shutting down Wayne in this one and making it tough for Peyton with different blitzes and looks. I also think the Jets can pound the Colts on the ground too, and at least keep this close. I see the Colts squeezing out a late victory in this one, so I will take the points.

Saints -3
This game is a complete toss up. These are probably the two best offenses right now, and it's going to come down to who has the ball last. That being said I will give the edge to the Saints, who will be playing at home in what might be the craziest atmosphere we have seen in a sporting event. The city needs this and I think Brees and Payton come through. Look for Sharper to make a play and look for the Saints D to slow down Favre just a little bit, to pull this one out. I think this game is going to be a classic, kinda like the Cards Packers was in the first round. I will be rooting for the Saints, they deserve it!

DERRICK ROSE DUNKS ON DRAGIC

Before tonight's game, Derrick Rose pledged to donate one thousand dollars for every point he scored vs the Suns towards Haiti relief.

"It means a lot to me to help out," Rose said. "That situation is part of all of us, the world period. It makes you feel good to donate and help others. I'm a caring guy so that's something that really hurt me."

Well Rose must be really caring, because when it was all said and done, Derrick finished with 32 points, which is 32 thousand dollars going towards relief. That is amazing!

Great job Derrick! Not only are you a sick baller, but a great person as well.

Check out his highlights from tonight's game, including his nasty jam on Dragic's HEAD!!!

DROSE working the Suns...

The DUNK!!! MAMMA THERE GOES THAT MAN!!!

Maybe after 32 points, the dunk of the year, and a Bulls win tonight, they will finally wake up and let DRose into the All Star Game! GO DROSE!!! GO BULLS!!!

Golf with Brett Favre

Boers and Bernstein, or as my college educated daughter calls them “Boring and Beefcakes”, were bad mouthing Brett Favre earlier this week. Listening for ten or fifteen minutes because that’s all I can handle, I realized their opinion was probably based on media hype, anti-Packer/Viking sentiment, a tinge of jealousy, and the jaded view from their soapbox because they never step down among us. Their opinion is all that matters, they love to hear themselves talk.

NBA POWER RANKINGS - WEEK 12

What's up players? We are back with this week's NBA Power Rankings, so check them out if you get a chance. Doing this week's rankings will be myself (Docksquad), and Amar Panchmatia (formerly of Cavalier Attitude).

Tip-Off:

1. (1) Cleveland Cavaliers (32-11)

  • What's this, four or five weeks in a row for the Cavs in our top spot? To be honest, the last few weeks has been due to default and the fact that their Christmas Day bashing of the Lakers was so convincing. But guess who's in town for a visit on Thursday night? (AP)

SAMOANS AND FOOTBALL

Imagine you're an NFL GM looking to upgrade your roster. Conventional wisdom would say to concentrate your efforts on the College powerhouses like Florida, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Etc. But over the last few years a new powerhouse has emerged. The island of American Samoa now sends more players to the NFL than any other place in the U.S. There are approximately 40 current NFL players with roots in American Samoa, rivaling the count of players from the aforementioned NCAA powerhouses. With their massive size, speed, ability, and heart, Samoans are 56 times more likely to play in the NFL than an average American. American Samoa has become to the NFL what the Dominican Republic is to Major League Baseball. The list includes future hall of famers like Jr. Seau and Troy Polamalu; other active players like Domata Peko, Lofa Tatupu, Rey Maualuga; and current college stars in Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli and ND linebacker Manti Te'o.

Yesterday 60 minutes had a great piece on this inspiring island and football breeding ground:

There's even All-Poly football camp that has become a recruiting hotbed, check it out here.

Lastly, check out the Haka Samoan Dance here...

John Daly is back: Lean & Mean Outside, Big Heart Inside

Daly's New Look

They wouldn’t let him in the Hawaiian Open pro-am party Tuesday night because nobody recognized him. He’s lost over a hundred pounds and rededicated himself, hopefully John sticks to it. He’s on his last leg, and at 44 years old his competitive years are not many. Watching the Hawaiian Open’s first two rounds made me realize what a draw JD is.

The Golf Channel treated him like royalty while promoting their new show “Being John Daly”. They followed every shot Friday afternoon and intertwined some revealing interviews with Frank Nobilo. Too bad there were no shots to follow over the weekend. John has burned a lot of bridges and it is hard telling when we’ll see him again.

John Daly is an enigma. He’s been a Nascar driver looking for a crash. He puzzles friends, family, fellow PGA Tour members, corporate sponsors, and tournament officials. Since 1991 he’s never made a splash it’s always been a tidal wave. The press usually blows his personal life out of proportion but if you’re John Daly you pick up the pieces and move on. We all remember the 1991 PGA, the shivering J.D. walking off the course during the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, and the myriad of stories, pictures, and exaggerations about his off course exploits.

Caddying on the PGA Tour for twenty years gave me an inside look at John Daly, the human being. He’s likeable, moody, charismatic, self-destructive, talented, obsessive-compulsive, fascinating; he’s a combination of traits occupying opposite ends of the spectrum, there’s not much in the middle. He won the 1991 PGA after an all night drive from Arkansas and “Squeaky” Medlin on the bag, a caddy he’d never met. He was ninth alternate and never expected to play. The common golf fan embraced him and the stodgy golf elite shuddered. He drew larger crowds, pre-Tiger, than anyone else.

John just completed this year’s first round at Waialae CC, fired a 73, and went on to miss the cut. The course is short and tight, not really designed for John’s game, but he was there bringing his golf and engaging persona back to the galleries. He has a new woman in his life, Onna, who cracks the whip, takes care of his business affairs keeping him on the straight and narrower off the course. She’s keeping him on an even keel but sometimes it is hard for someone to play outside their personality.

John’s life has reflected his golf game, all or nothing. There’s no in between, but there is a large, caring heart just below those massive shoulders. He loves people, takes care of his friends and family, and doesn’t really care what the public thinks as long as he feels he’s doing the right thing. He’s created some extremely sticky situations over the years but always accepted the blame, faced the press straight away, and owned up to the consequences, unlike some other sports personalities these days.

He’s a soft spoken good ol’ boy who enjoys life’s extremes. Jeans and t-shirts, cut-offs and tank tops, Jack Daniels and diet Cokes, Dallas Cowboy games in Jerry Jones’ box, winning majors and walking off smaller venues mid-round, drinks at watering holes and dinners with Dubai royalty; there hasn’t been much in-between over the years, he’s loveable to all walks of life. John has let people down but always tried to make it up to them some way or another; he’s attached to his fans, not removed like most of today’s sports heroes.

At the 2008 Bayhill tournament hosted by Arnold Palmer J.D. had a rough week. His professional golf life was spiraling downward at the time and eventually Tim Finchem suspended John for six months. He’s been out of the limelight for awhile and on the surface appears a changed man; hopefully he hasn’t altered his big heart. He told Frank Nobilo during an interview last Wednesday in Hawaii, “As long as I don’t change my heart, I’ll be okay.”

I was there watching him handle the turmoil in 2008, maybe this will shed some light on John Daly, the person.

John Daly’s Week at Bay Hill – 2008

Tiger and Stevie created all the excitement on the course last year; J.D. and Peter, his caddy, had some thorny off course matters, but the public doesn’t know the complete story. John dealt with some difficult issues that week, and those broad shoulders perched over his beer gut handled them very well. Everyone knows he was DQ’d because he missed his Wednesday pro-am time and Butch Harmon, his swing coach, made some disparaging public remarks about John. All of this hit the tabloid front pages full throttle; it was Golf Central breaking news and on the cover of periodicals.

John’s bus was parked at Celebration Country Club all week; we hung out at the Celebration Town Tavern and watched John deal with the turmoil. He came in from Tampa following the John Gruden/Hooters incident the Saturday before. It started Monday, escalated through the week, and he dealt with it all smiling, contributing what he could to Robert Gamez’s foundation pro-am. After playing in Arnold’s Monday pro-am he appeared on Leader Board Radio at the Town Tavern hosted by Ian Davies.

We were relaxing with a few beers, the crowd was enjoying the show and John’s company until three a@%#oles arrived in a limo. While John was being interviewed they started badgering him about being fat and not able to play anymore. Peter, John’s caddy, and I were sitting at a table with Robert’s old friend Hank when they turned on the crowd. John politely dismissed the rabble-rousers but they continued their insulting behavior and we couldn’t handle the abuse. We stood up, kindly asked them to move on when one of them pushed old Hank to the ground. All hell broke loose for about thirty seconds. I was wrestling on the ground with the main culprit, Ian Davies had some bloody knuckles from a well placed fist, and John was the voice of reason. He stood on a chair, towered over the melee and bellowed, “Knock it off! Stop this shit! We don’t need this here at Billy’s place!” His presence cooled off the melee, everyone separated and replaced the overturned chairs and tables. John escorted the three culprits to a back room table, spent time creating some peace and set up a game with them later in the week. If the papers had caught wind of the incident, who knows what the headlines would have been.

Tuesday we saw John on the putting green. He had played golf with some friends, answered numerous questions about Butch Harmon’s public remarks, but still had that childish grin, shrugging his shoulder about all the hoopla.

We met at the Town Tavern for dinner and reviewed last night’s rhubarb. John didn’t want to take any credit for peacemaker, but did show us the text from Butch earlier that day. Butch is one of the top teachers in the world, but nobody has the right to say the things he did. There were no telephone calls or personal conversations, just text messages and Butch’s diatribes in the press. John shrugged it off, sought no retribution, and sipped on his diet Coke throughout the evening. Tom Glavine, along with a few other major leaguers, came in and John joined them before heading home early.

We all asked John and Peter what time they were playing the next day. Their tee time seemed odd for a pro-am and we suggested they double check it.

Both said, “Nope, this is what the tournament office gave us, it must be right.”

The tournament office staff gave John and Peter their Thursday tee time instead of the pro-am time. John was on his way to the course Wednesday for his assumed 11:11 time when he got a call from PGA tour officials saying he was DQ’d from the tournament because he missed his morning time.

John pleaded his case, but refused to place the blame on anyone but himself and Peter. Those broad shoulders have a pretty good base, plus they have had a lot of exercise over the years. Through all his turmoil John always accepts the blame and carries on with his life. He could have split town right then, packed up his bus and went home, but he stuck around. There were some charity commitments to keep and some neglected pro-am guests he wanted to play golf with over the weekend.

John apologized to Arnold and tournament sponsors then contacted the four guys he was supposed to play with Wednesday and rescheduled a Saturday round with them. He didn’t have to do it; his big heart forced him.

We kept an eye on John during the rest of the week, kind of a suicide watch, but it wasn’t necessary. He spent the days playing golf, hanging out at the bus, and making new friends. There were no drunken binges, I’m not going to say there was no drinking, and John hung around for Robert’s charity functions over the weekend.

None of this made the front pages. Golf Channel made an effort to get John’s side of the story but it didn’t get the same amount of air time as his screw-up. The papers made a minor reference to the Saturday round with the deserted pro-am team. There wasn’t much mentioned about two other players being DQ’d for pro-am infractions, only John made the headlines. John told us he didn’t care; he was doing the right thing, that’s all that matters.

Every time we stopped by the bus there was time for conversation and laughs. Some friends of mine were in town and he made them feel like long lost buddies. The guitar was out on the couch, the fridge was stocked, and John’s arms were open to everyone. The town of Celebration adopted him that week and vice versa. It wasn’t about John the golf celebrity; it was a lot about John the person. The local folks saw John’s Daly personal side and the community embraced the big guy.

Saturday Robert’s foundation put on a concert in downtown Celebration. J.D. was one of the first to arrive and positioned himself in front of the stage. Throughout the night he never turned down an autograph seeker, picture taker, hand-shaker, or a beer; and joined Hootie and the Blowfish for a few songs. He was the center of attention but really just wanted to be part of the crowd and help raise money for Robert’s children charities. John roamed the crowd coaxing cash from their pockets into a large jug then quietly disappeared when the job was done.

John was there for the charity dinner on Sunday night and of course the Monday pro-am. His shirt was on at all times and his foursome had a great time. He was in flip-flops and his celebrity partner got some special attention; she was a cute C&W singer, I don’t blame him. Most pros would have been long gone after the debacle on Wednesday, but John didn’t abandon his friends. He waved his appearance fee but wanted nobody to know; he was having fun for a good cause.

Maybe Bay Hill week was the start of his problems last year that led to his suspension in the fall. We’ve missed the loveable S.O.B. out here on tour; hopefully the suspension will do him some good. It was getting a bit out of control; a big heart and shoulders can only carry you so far. John is good for golf up to a point; the PGA Tour and corporate sponsors can only handle so much. Maybe this suspension should have been handed out long ago, but it’s hard to get pissed at John. That sheepish grin, shrug of the shoulders, and, “Sorry Pards’” has got him out of a lot of jams.

We all hope the grin comes back and he wins a few more tournaments before his career is over.

STONE COLD LEAD PIPE DOCKS - PLAYOFF EDITION

Suman's Pix:
(Last Week 2-2)
(Overall 50-39-2)

Cardinals +7

I can't pick against ol' man Warner just yet. This Cardinals offense is clicking, and I'm not a big believer of the Saints defense after they struggled to the finish line. This will be another Packers/Cards type of shootout however I don't think the Cards D is as bad as they looked last week. The sensible argument is that "if AR and the Packers did that against the Cards, imagine what Brees and the Saints will do..." and that is probably true. But I still can't bet against the Cards getting 7. This one just has the feel of a nail biter to me.

Colts -6
The Colts will put all 11 men in the box if need be, and make Joe Flacco beat them after last week. And I'm saying that he won't be able to. He just isn't ready for this type of stage yet, and he doesn't have the type of receivers to make the Colts pay. On the other hand, you know Peyton is boiling that Caldwell sacrificed their perfect season for the team's "well-being." Well I think Peyton comes out gunnin' like Tony Montana in this one. I haven't been a huge believer in the Ravens all season. Ray Rice is an absolute stud, but they don't have much else in terms of firepower. The Colts are smart enough to take him away, so I think they dominate this one.

Vikings -2.5
I'll be honest I won't be betting on this game as I have no clue what will happen. I really feel this will be the best game of the weekend. In this case I just have to go with my gut, and my gut tells me Brett Favre still has one more run left in him. He'll be at home, the Metrodome is one of the few venues that offers a true home field advantage, and the Vikes will be well rested. It kills me because probably no team in the league is playing as well as the Cowboys. But in the matchup of Romo vs. Favre, I have to take Favre. And if Purple Jesus, All-Day Adrian Peterson is everything we believe he is, he will carry his team to victory with one or two big gainers.

Jets +8
The main reason for this pick is that the general public seems to think that the Jets will roll over, and that there is no way in hell the Chargers blow this one. You have to give the edge to the Chargers in the QB matchup. However, I believe the Sanchise has turned the corner in terms of not being a liability anymore. He'll be back home in Cali, and I see him making one or two special plays in this one. That running game is superb, the defense is tops, and they won't just crumble. They were given a gift getting into the playoffs. Meanwhile, while I believe the Chargers pull this off, I think the Jets keep it relatively close. Look for about 1,920,281 LaDainian Tomlinson "Electric Glide" commercials to play during this game.

IP's Pix:
(Last Week 2-2)
(Overall 42-35-5)

Chargers -7 – This is their year fellas, this is the years the Chargers get to the Big Dance and win it all! The Jets got a strong defense and a sick secondary, but the Chargers got too many weapons and got that swagger many other teams do not. Look for the Sanchise to cough the ball up as they will not be able to control the clock in this game and the Chargers to take advantage. I got the Chargers by 10.

Cowboys +2.5 – I picked Romo and America’s team to go to the Super Bowl and I am sticking to it. The are playing well at the right time and their attack on both sides of the ball is impressive. The Vikings offensive line gets a lot of hype but I do nto think they can handle the ends of Dallas. Look for Romo & Co. to go up north and beat the Vikings and start the Brett Favre retirement/comeback watch. Cowboys by 6.

Saints -7 – Brees, Superdome, sick offense. This one is going to be a waxing people. Saints by a lot.

Colts -6 - Everyone is hating on the Colts because of the unimpressive regular season wins and shutting down the team while the perfect season was still going. But people forget how sick this team is and how ridiculously Manning is. This could be the greatest of all time after all is said and done. Rest assured this team will be prepared and ready to go. I got the Colts just smashing the Ravens, and coasting into the AFC title game. Take the Colts BIG here.

Vik's Pix:
(Last Week 0-4)
(Overall 36-38-1)

Cardinals +7
That game last week vs the Packers was awesome. And while I wanted to pick the Cards, I had to go with the Packers just for jinxing purposes. Of course my jinx worked, which made my week! Yes I'm a hater. Anyways, on to this game. Real quick on the Boldin injury front, it looks like Boldin will give it a shot and play this weekend. But we learned one thing last weekend, and that is that the Cards don't need Boldin to put up pts. Their offense runs just fine with Breaston, Doucet, and with one of the best WRs in the game, Fitz! I also think that playing in the dome this weekend will help the Cards offense and the man, HOF'er Kurt Warner. I mean the guy had more touchdowns than incompletions last weekend! How sick is that?!?! I also see the Cards D stepping up to the plate and containing Brees. Not stopping him, but making just enough stops to keep this game close. Teams starting learning how to stop this Saints offense towards the end of the year. On the flip side of the ball, I see Brees and co. coming out rusty. They haven't played a meaningful game since what, Christmas? And on top of that, they looked bad in their last 5 games, even when the games counted. Last year's Super Bowl runner ups are not going to be intimidated in this game. And they don't have a problem going on the road at all. They are a strong road team, like the Ravens. It just sucks that these two teams are facing each other in this round. I really love watching both of these squads play.
In the end, I see the Cards having enough weapons to keep up with the Saints.

Vikings -2(bought hook)
Of all the games this weekend, I see this one being where home field advantage helps a team the most. As a NFC North guy, I see the Vikings play a lot, and I especially know how hard it is to play at the Metrodome. Also if you look back at the last 22 games the Vikings have played at the Metrodome, including the playoffs, they are 18-4. That place gets deafening to say the least, and that HORN! THAT DAMNED VIKING HORN IS THE WORST!! That stadium will definitely make it tough for the Cowboys to run their offense. I also see it causing some false starts, and some miscommunication. The Cowboys are hot right now, but the Vikings have the ability on the defensive side of the ball to stop them. They also have the ability to get to the QB, which is huge when facing Tony Romo. I see them pressuring him, and making him make some bad throws in this game. I also know that the Cowboys DLine is amazing, but this Vikings OLine is a lot better than that Eagles one the Cowboys faced last weekend. I see them giving Favre enough time in this game. I also see Favre having one of his ridiculous performances and carrying this squad on his back in this one. APete will do his thing, but Favre will be the difference. Look for the Vikings to exploit the Cowboys with Harvin and Vishante. I know everyone is on the Cowboys bandwagon right now, but I see the Vikings pulling this out by a touchdown. I'll take the team with a good defense, one of the best running games, and a home team in a rowdy atmosphere this one.

Ravens +7 (bought hook)
I know that the Colts beat the Ravens earlier this season. But if you watched that game like I did, then you know that the Ravens should've won that game late, if not for a dumb Flacco pick. The Ravens dominated that game, especially on the defensive side of the ball. They forced Manning into a ton of bad throws, and picked him off twice in that one as well. I see them going on the road into a hostile environment, and keeping this game close. Now I know people will say well it's Flacco vs Manning, so give us Manning all day. While that is true, I know the Ravens are smart enough to know that the key to their success will be two things. Their defense and their running game. Their defense is again the spearhead of this team. They are ranked top ten in pretty much every statistical category. I see Ray Lewis and Ed Reed doing what they do best, and that is showing up for big games. On the offensive side of the ball, I know they will keep this game close with their amazing running game. How do I know this? Because the Colts are ranked 25th in stopping the run. Lastly, the Ravens are at their best on the road in the playoffs. They have the best record of anyone on the road in the playoffs, and they are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road playoff games. Lastly, I think all that time off will take it's toll on the Colts. I like betting on good road teams, who play defense and run the ball in the playoffs.
I know everyone is on the Colts, but I will take the Ravens and the pts. in this one.

Jets +8
I know everyone is on the Chargers, since they have been one of the hottest teams in football, but I will have to take the pts. in this one. This Jets team plays amazing defense, and they can run the ball. As you read above in my other picks, those are two things I love during playoff football. This Jets team is built not to get waxed. Having a player like Revis helps with that. The dude literally shuts down half of the field, and the best opposing WR's. He is fun to watch, and I definitely think he got robbed in not winning the DPOY Award. And so do the Jets. They are pissed, especially Rex Ryan. I see them using this as a chip on their shoulders this weekend. I love what Rex Ryan has done with this team, and they made me believers last weekend. Thomas Jones and Greene are a great 1-2 running combo, and their strength is definitely the Chargers weakness. The Chargers are weak in defending the run, so I see the Jets coming in game planning similar to the Ravens. Just playing staunch D, and pounding the ball on the ground.
The Chargers are playing amazing football, so we can not take that away from them. And while I do see them pulling this game out, I see it being a close game all the way through. As you can see with my other picks, getting more than a touchdown on a team that plays great D, has a great running game, and has a chip on their shoulder does it for me in this one.

take care and gluck this weekend playaz...

The Bad, the Unfortunate, and the Confusing by Justin Dreyfuss

What is going on in the world of sports right now? It seems everyone has lost their minds. Ok, maybe not everyone, but it's not a small percentage of important people in the sports world that have been making ridiculous decisions lately. A majority of the news dominating the headlines recently has been for things outside of actual games. Each week we seem to be moving further and further from what we should be caring about, but it's hard to focus on who's winning and losing when there are such idiots out there.

I've broken a few of the news stories down into different categories since each story has been ridiculous, but each one tugs at a different part of your what-the-hell-were-they-thinking brain lobe. I think that's somewhere near the temporal lobe.

The Bad: Gilbert Arenas

We'll start right off with the people we knew right away were in for a world of trouble. We could do nothing but shake our heads as we read the breaking news scroll on the ESPN bottom line that says "Gilbert Arenas is contacted by federal authorities after pulling guns on teammate." Really? Come on Gilbert. Play poker at half time, yell "hibachi" when you make a routine basket, carry on a blog where you aren't afraid to rip on anyone and challenge DeShawn Stevensen to a three point contest while you use one hand. We're fine with all of that. Your antics are who you are and as long as your name isn't Skip Bayless no one should have a problem with this because professional sports are entertainment and none of this is hurting anyone. Sports are not, and never will be, life or death…. unless you pull something like this. Pun intended.

Playing around with guns is something completely different. A couple things about this really bother me. Some people are blaming the media for supporting Arenas' playful antics and believe it's that unofficial support that caused him to keep pushing his boundaries. That is ridiculous. He isn't a 7 year old pushing his limits, he's a grown man with kids and shouldn't have to be told the difference between right and wrong. He was suspended because of how he has dealt with the aftermath of the initial story, not because of the guns themselves and I don't blame Stern one bit. And this is coming from a huge fan of Arenas. Guns are not something to joke about…which brings me to my next point.

Why exactly does he have so many guns and why, if he did indeed bring them to the Verizon Center to get them away from his kids, did he keep them at all? Is there something I am missing about professional athletes? Is there a secret society assigned to carry out hits on famous sports stars? What is it that causes so many athletes to bring guns everywhere? Never ONCE have I seen a headline about an athlete who saved his or anyone else's life by using a gun in self-defense. I'm so glad these athletes feel the desperate need to protect themselves and their undeserved mountain of wealth but how is having a gun stuffed in their pants doing any good?

It's unfathomable to me that someone in such a lucky position could treat his life with such disrespect and that someone who is apparently mature enough to have multiple children would let a gambling debt rise to the level of gun play. Since this was over the course of days, it's even more amazing that at no point in this argument did Arenas have the brains to be the bigger man than his teammate, considering he is much wealthier, a much better basketball player and has a much better overall life than his teammate Crittenton. Apparently being the unquestionable starter on a playoff hopeful, a multi-millionaire and loved by millions of people around the world was not enough for Gilbert to suck this one up before anyone even thought about guns.

Gives a whole new meaning to the basketball term "shoot-around" doesn't it?

The Unfortunate – Mark McGwire

It's unfortunate that it took Big Mac this long to come clean about steroids. It's been pretty obvious for a while now but apparently he needed to see others like Pettite and A-Rod go before him before making up his mind that this was his best choice.

I do believe that Big Mac is very sincere about using drugs and I do believe he took them to get over his injuries. Steroids were hailed as a miracle drug in the early 90's for injuries and Big Mac had to deal with all sorts of pressure after putting up amazing numbers the first few years he was in the league. I'm not excusing him, but I believe it was an honest mistake.

What is unfortunate about this timing is it clearly is not because he just couldn't live with it anymore. In fact, it has everything to do with watching another hall of fame induction come and go and his name still being on the back burner. It has everything to do with being hired by the Cardinals as a hitting coach and most likely them telling him to do this to improve his image now that he is back in the public spotlight. Especially if he in fact might play in the playoffs like La Russa has said. Tell me you wouldn't be glued to your TV if he were up to bat in 2010. I'd buy a portable satellite TV just to make sure I watched him break an unsuspecting building window over the parking lot. Alright maybe not, but the man is still more intimidating than a STD test for Paris Hilton.

The Confusing – The World of Lane Kiffin

I really do not care about Kiffin leaving Tennessee. USC is better than Tennessee in almost every way possible. Why would he not? Does he have some intense connection to Tennessee I don't know about? People seem so upset about him leaving after only a year after all the headlines he made at Tennessee and the promises of greatness. The students even rioted this week, calling him a liar, angry that he left. I only have one question.

Why?

Why does anyone care that he left Tennessee if you are a fan of Tennessee? Why does anyone keep hiring him? Why does USC, the best college football program this decade along with Florida, want him?

He has done NOTHING. He was the coach of the Raiders and was terrible. He left in a huge fight with Al Davis who took very personal shots at his integrity. Granted, it's not hard to get in a fight with Davis, but this was pretty serious. Then we went to Tennessee where he did nothing but sling mud at everyone else in the conference. While he was busy calling out Urban Meyer for fake recruiting violations, Meyer was busy winning a National Championship and beating Tennessee.

I guess with that great resume it's obvious why USC wants him. Just not to me. Do they really think it's a coincidence that everywhere he has gone losing has followed him? Do they think it's a coincidence he leaves his employers on very bad terms after pissing everyone off that is connected to him? It is not. He clearly has a volatile personality. He's one of those guys with an unwarranted sense of accomplishment even though he has done nothing. His instinct is to talk trash and play the bad boy attitude but he's too stupid to say anything intelligent or constructive and has no idea when to stop. Saying you are going to beat Florida and saying people have broken NCAA violations is not very creative or intelligent. It only makes you look like an idiot, Kiffin. Win something, then talk. Until then, shut up.

Now USC is going to be paying a coach millions of dollars that has shown nothing good on record. The underlying issue of all this is that he's a coach! A COACH! Sports have shown us one thing about coaches ever since sports have been around - only the top few percent actually matter. If your name is not Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, Vince Lombardi, Bill Cowher, Joe Torre, Jim Leyland or a few others then really it doesn't matter too much. It's just a matter of finding someone to manage your players, not get into trouble and finding a good fit for your organization. I always find it funny when losing coaches at several places always get picked up for millions of dollars by yet another team. What do they think is going to happen to change everything all of a sudden?

Lane Kiffin is a perfect example of this. So far he has shown nothing. Yes, he will probably win at USC but only because it's USC. You could literally put anyone at USC and they would at least have a winning percentage. Kiffin will do nothing but stir things up negatively, and as far as I can tell, turn them into a mediocre program.

People already know USC is a great program so there is no need to hire a "big name" coach to lure recruits. You just need someone that has shown they can do it elsewhere by connecting with kids and being able to handle themselves with professionalism. Kiffin has done neither. I also cringe at labeling him a "big name" coach. I like to keep that for coaches that have actually done something impressive and not just for forcing yourself into the media with news off the field.

The angry mobs at Tennessee are there because of the lack of respect Kiffin has shown Tennessee and that he clearly thinks he's a much better coach than he is. That being said, I blame the students for caring, the universities for hiring him and for anyone caring about what Kiffin does. He is the product of the problem, not the problem itself. The lesson here, as always, big time schools are run with money, notoriety and non-sports people making sports decisions. I don't care if used to coach at USC, there are plenty of other coaches out there far more qualified than Lane Kiffin. Give those who have paid their dues the rewards. Not someone like Kiffin who represents everything that is wrong with coaches and sports.

A Fan’s Lament – The Fleecing of Sports Fans by Mark Huber

Growing up in central Illinois I was a diehard Cubs fan, the Bears and Bulls were my favorites but I didn’t live and die with them. My first game was a 1969 Wrigley Field Cub-Cardinal doubleheader, Billy Williams Day, helping my hero celebrate his continuous game streak and watching him hit for the cycle in four straight at-bats. Whatever sport was in season my instincts followed but my heart was always with the Cubs and baseball. I couldn’t wait for my Sporting News subscription every Saturday morning; it was all about baseball back then.
Over the years my passion waned and today there are no more heroes playing my childhood games. In 1994 I was enjoying my first Fenway Park trip sitting next to a father and son team. The ten year old kid had his ball glove, hot dog, and Coke; Dad was telling him about Ted, Yaz, and El Tiante. I thought to myself, “If those S.O.B.’s strike, I’ll never watch another game. I’ve been to ball park heaven and experienced a sentimental moment.” The players walked out and I spent the next four years watching minor league games traveling the PGA Tour circuit.
I never played golf when I was a kid but was starting to admire the character make-up of the PGA Tour professional. Baseball was chasing me away much like the McCaskey family forced me north to Lambeau Field. Ineptness, greed, and lack of concern for the fan were no way to run a business. I became a Packer fan and a golf admirer, not just a caddy, and avoided the MLB for the next four years until my caddie buddies drug me to Busch Stadium late in 1998. The home run chase was the only draw.
Today, I wish they hadn’t twisted my arm. That night stirred my childhood admiration once more and I thought heroes were returning, but everyone knew what was going on and they hid it from the fans. Managers knew, GM’s knew, Bud knew, everyone in baseball let it slide because performance enhancing drugs were filling seats, the only thing that really matters to baseball executives. They hooked me with false pretenses; I was in awe of Sosa, McGwire, and Bonds and started following the box scores once again.
I should have listened to Jack Nicklaus on the Pebble Beach driving range in 1991. Everyone was watching a long drive competition between John Daly, McGwire, and Canseco. J.D was launching drives into the pines. When the “Bash Brothers” connected their drives were still rising at the tree line. It’s not often everyone stops practicing to watch someone hit balls, Jack turned to the crowd of players and caddies, “Somebody better check what they’re drinking.” None of us knew about those things back then and baseball kept it very quiet for their benefit.
Four of the top ten all time home run hitters come from the “Steroid Era”. We’re going to need an asterisk, needle, or pill bottle next to their names. Everyone tries to gain an advantage, cheating is allowed on the ball field, but it’s not fair to take a fan’s heart through false pretenses. The individuals are at fault but the players association and baseball executives should have put a stop to it. Greed got in the way. The few players popping pills were making money for the many.
Tiger’s in hiding, McGwire’s finally giving teary eyed conditional apologies, and fans are wondering where to attach an allegiance. Tiger fleeced us with his virtuous character foil. His sponsors and agents knew what was going on but strong armed the media and kept it quiet for a long time. His golf wasn’t the only reason he landed those big money contracts and convinced the public to buy his sponsor’s products. He was a great spokesperson as long as we engulfed his phony family man portrayal.
McGwire was a great ballplayer as long as we didn’t know about the steroids. Why now, why not five years ago, Mark? How come you hid behind legalese for so long? The confession would have meant a lot more if it came from the heart instead of clearing up things before spring training and after a poor Hall of Fame showing. Our sports figures are just that these days, figures not people, it’s quite disheartening. Nobody really knows anything about who we’re shelling out hundreds to watch these days; hopefully everything won’t turn into pure fantasy league and we lose that personal attachment with our sporting heroes.
It’s just another fleecing of the masses by corporate America, we need to get used to it, I guess. If you can’t figure out what to believe these days, hitch up a wagon and join the parade. We’ve got NBA clowns carrying guns and the team bans card games on planes instead of banning the guns. Roger Goodel seems to be the only one controlling the inmates. Finchem and Selig let the troops run the fort as long as the money was piling up.
We watch professional sports with a lot of skepticism these days. Athleticism is supreme, but character has slipped away and you’re always wondering about the person in uniform. I spent the last four or five years supporting Tiger and bashing Phil, supporting golf and bad mouthing the team sports, and wishing I could see Billy Williams kneeling in the on deck circle swinging at that chunk of gum. It’s not positive dwelling on the good old days, but it sure feels good at the moment.

NBA POWER RANKINGS - WEEK 11

What's good NBA fans? We are back with this week's NBA Power Rankings. Doing the rankings this week will be myself (Docksquad), Amar Panchmatia (formerly of Cavalier Attitude), and let's welcome DSS' newest writer, Justin D.

Tip-Off:

1. (1) Cleveland Cavs (29-10)

  • The Cavs are playing the best basketball out of the elite teams in the league, and because of that, they remain atop of our power rankings this week. One thing is for sure, ever since the Cavs decided to go small a few weeks ago, their offense has been really clicking. That being said, will the Cavs stick with this roster? Is this roster good enough to win a Championship this year, or will the Cavs soon trade for a Jamison or a Murphy? GWS. (VC)

2. (2) Los Angeles Lakers (29-8)

  • Andrew Bynum for Chris Bosh? If you're a fan of any of the other 29 teams, what's the point of even going on at that point? Bynum, however, fits in a lot better than Bosh would and fills his role well, and the Lakers don't look like they need help unless they're trying to create the best team on paper of all time. (AP)
3. (3) Boston Celtics (26-9)
  • The Celts are still in the elite class, but will they be able to sustain injuries and stay up there for the rest of the year? We all knew with all the tread on their tires, that the big three would have injuries this year. PP already went down earlier, and now KG is hurt. But luckily for the Celtics, they have Rondo and Perkins still. Those guys are carrying this squad, and Rondo deserves to make the All Star game. (VC)
4. (4) Orlando Magic (25-12)
  • Even with their four losses against sub .500 teams in their last 5 games, the Magic remain in the top four. No other elite team has been able to string together a solid win streak to catch up. Still, it’s a little troubling when Dwight Howard allows an 18-15 for Brendan Haywood and 26 points by Roy Hibbert, who he outweighs for 640 pounds. Another issue is the injury to Vince Carter. We’ll see how long Vinsanity milks this one for. (JD)
5. (7) Dallas Mavericks (25-12)
  • The Mavs looked a little shaky last week, so let’s see if they can turn things around this week. Dirk Diggler is still doing his thing, but he can’t do it alone, the guy needs some help. And with Howard always out hurt, it doesn’t look like any help is coming soon, unless Cuban shakes up the roster. Anyways, I just don’t see this team hanging around in the top five much longer. (VC)
6. (6) San Antonio Spurs (22-13)
  • On second thought, why the hell are the Spurs ranked so high? They're 2-11 against teams above .500, and they still have the rodeo trip coming up. These guys have to get their act together, and fast -- but as far as making the playoffs, they should be okay. (AP)
7. (10) Phoenix Suns (23-14)
  • Best offense in the game? The Suns think so, and the numbers say so. Steve Nash is somehow getting better with time, like aged wine. He’s a legit top 5 MVP candidate. Can they make one last magical playoff run? (VC)
8. (11) Denver Nuggets
  • The Nuggets jump into the top ten again thanks to a thrilling game against the Cavs in which they held off the king thanks to late game three pointers and rebounding. They showed they can play without Melo, but with JR Smith doing his best Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde impersonations, they won’t win a seven game series without Anthony in the line-up and Billups running the offense. Still, it was encouraging to see their intensity against the Cavs last Friday.(JD)
9. (8) Atlanta Hawks (23-13)
  • In the beginning of the year the Hawks were looking like one of the five best teams in the game. Fast forward to week 11, and they are barely hanging on in the top 10. I still think this Hawks team is a solid team that will contend in the playoffs, but the way they have been getting blown out recently is cause for concern. I don’t know what happened to that Hawks squad from the beginning of the year, but Coach Woodson needs to do something fast before they fall even further. (VC)
10. (5) Portland Trail Blazers (23-16)
  • Win over the Lakers was great. Loss to the Cavs was expected, given the fact that PDX has lost 11 of their last 13 to Cleveland. But losses to the Clippers and Grizzlies? At least a trip to the Rose Garden makes for a good date. (AP)
11. (21) New Orleans Hornets (19-17)
  • The biggest movers from last week. And with each win, it's looking less and less likely that they'll move David West at the deadline. They do, however, need to get creative to shed some payroll. Earth-shattering moves aren't necessary, and odds are they won't be made this year in New Orleans. (AP)
12. (9) Houston Rockets (21-16)
  • The Rockets drop a few spots this week after their poor showing on their road trip against some elite teams. They beat up on the Knicks at home, where they never seem to lose, but you won’t be able to advance far in the NBA without learning to win on the road in unfriendly environments. The longer their ordeal with T-Mac drags out, the worse off they will be. They need to resolve their Mac-Daddy issues quickly. (JD)
13. (12) OKC Thunder (20-16)
  • F your +-! That is basically what Durant is telling the haters right now. The Thunder have 4x more wins right now then they did at this time last year and Durant is dropping over 32 points a game in his last ten. I got a chance to watch the Thunder vs. the Bulls last week, and Durant and company looked great. Durant took over in the third, and the Thunder never looked back. Not only is this squad fun to watch, but you can see that they are getting better on a game by game basis. Their only problem this year has been beating the elite teams, so let’s see if they can get it done this week when they play the Spurs and Mavs. (VC)
14. (13) Utah Jazz (21-17)
  • With six losses at home already, it's going to be tough for a Utah team that traditionally sucks on the road to win the Northwest Division. The scarier news if you're Utah? Looks like Oklahoma City is saying "peace" as they blow right by in the division's hierarchy. (AP)
15. (16) Miami Heat (18-18)
  • If Miami wasn't such a great city with amazing weather, Dwyane Wade would have one foot out the door. Hell, if I was him, based on the way this team has been twanging, I'd bolt regardless. Even if Miami lands Bosh, they aren't close to the East's "Big Three" or the Lakers out West. Hope Wade enjoyed that '06 chip thoroughly. (AP)
16. (14) Memphis Grizzlies (18-18)
  • The Grizzlies continue to play solid ball behind the consistent play of Zach Randolph who posted absolutely monster games of 27-14 and 29-15 in two wins against the Trail Blazers and Jazz, respectively. Is it just a matter of time before Randolph says “screw it” again or will they actually make a push for the playoffs? (JD)
17. (20) Los Angeles Clippers (17-18)
  • Are the Clippers a legit darkhorse in the West, or are they just another fun squad to play with in video games? I’m leaning more towards darkhorse myself. They have won 4 in a row, beating the Lakers, Celtics, and Blazers in that streak. The key to their improved play has come from the defensive side of the ball. And of course it helps when Baron Davis is back ballin on cats. If Baron can stay healthy, this team might be a dangerous out once they get Griffin back. Baron, Gordon, Griffin, Kaman. Sick with it. (VC)
18. (15) Toronto Raptors (19-20)
  • I feel bad whenever I talk about the Raptors because every single time I keep having to talk about Chris Bosh's future with the franchise. This week's edition of "Bosh Watch" features rumors that the sides won't even have to wait until July for an inevitable divorce, with the Rockets and Lakers interested in trading for the all-world power forward. (AP)
19. (19) Charlotte Bobcats (16-19)
  • Is it just me, or is G-Force coming of age? Unbelievable. And he's only 27. The Bobcats have their franchise cornerstone, and instead of being sellers in the trade market, they need to be buyers and rejuvenate what was a once-proud NBA town. Much love, Charlotte, North Carolina. Much love. (AP)
20. (17) New York Knicks (15-2)
  • Here come the Knicks? With the way the Knicks have been playing since December started, it looks like the Knicks have a legit chance at making the playoffs this year. While I still have no clue what is going on between D’Antoni and Nate Rob, I do know that the Knicks have been playing solid basketball after their terrible start. Oh ya, Wilson Chandler, Depaul’s very own, has been ballin on cats too. (VC)
21. (22) Milwaukee Bucks (15-20)
  • I'm going to get a chance to check this team out live Wednesday night when they visit the Rose Garden. Unfortunately, I won't get to see fellow Buckeye Michael Redd, as the face of the franchise found out he'll miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and MCL. As bright as this team's future looked at the beginning of the season with Young Money, it just got a lot bleaker because Redd's career is now in serious jeopardy. (AP)
22. (18) Chicago Bulls (15-20)
  • Just after we thought the Bulls were making progress with a big game by Rose and a few quality wins they go and drop three straight to the Thunder at home and then road games against the lowly Bobcats and Bucks. At least they rebounded with a win against the T-Wolves, right? Eh. (JD)
23. (23) Sacramento Kings (15-21)
  • OK, is it just me, or are all these rankings starting to look the same as last week's? Anyways, you can't complain if you're a Kings fan. The team is light years ahead of where it was last year, and you're about to match last season's win total by the midway point of the season. Recent five game skid was ugly, but beating a good Denver team to snap it did Sacto proud. Good job. (AP)
24. (27) Washington Wizards
  • A nice win over the Magic combined with Jamison’s apology to the Washington fans show that the Wizards haven’t given up on their season just yet. No team is out of it in the Eastern Conference, so it’s time to turn the young kids loose, start Randy Foye and they might get lucky. Haywood has been playing very well recently, but they still can’t seem to finish games. Just ask the Hornets. (JD)
25. (25) Golden State Warriors (11-24)
  • The Warriors are struggling, and it is only a matter of time before the Don Nelson show comes to an end. When will that happen, and more importantly, will the Warriors make a trade soon? GWS. (VC)
26. (24) Philadelphia 76ers (12-25)
  • These guys, as well as the Pistons, are the poster boys for not building a team through free agency. With Elton Brand's huge contract crippling their payroll, Philly has limited flexibility with their roster moving forward. At least Allen Iverson is selling tickets, right? (AP)
27. (28) Indiana Pacers (12-25)
  • It's going to be a while before this once-proud franchise returns to prominence. Especially with the Eastern Conference actually getting better and better each year. Will they move Troy Murphy for cap relief by the trade deadline? (AP)
28. (29) Minnesota Twolves (8-30)
  • Did the Wolves really offer Jefferson for Granger? There are rumors Love and Jefferson are not getting along. If that’s the case, I think the Bulls should do everything they can to try to get Jefferson. Let’s see what happens, but that rumor was definitely a surprise to me. On a side note, J Flynn is nasty. I got to see him last Saturday vs the Bulls and the kid can shake and bake with the best of them. He still looks like he is on ‘Cuse, playing in that 6 ot game. Sick. (VC)
29. (26) Detroit Pistons (11-24)
  • Oof. The Pistons seem to be giving the Nets a run for their money. There isn’t much to blame for their 12 game skid. They have no big time injuries like with the Nets and Devin Harris. It seems the main issue for their struggles is they have messed too much with the sole reason they were successful in the 2000’s – chemistry. They have none. Maybe they’ll get lucky with Ben Gordon dropping 50 in his return to Chicago? (JD)
30. (30) New Jersey Nets (3-34)
  • Another week at #30. At least the Thunder, who were just as atrocious last season, had Kevin Durant's career to look forward to. What do the Nets have? LeBron? Yeah. Right. (AP)
