April 1st
On this day...
- in 1991, the NY Mets signed Dwight Gooden to a 3-year contract extension worth $15.45 million, making him the 2nd highest paid player in baseball (Roger Clemens signed 4-year contract extension worth $21.521 million earlier that year in February, making him the highest paid player in baseball at that). Ironically, exactly 4 years earlier on April 1, 1987, Dwight checked in to a rehab center to avoid suspension after he tested positive for cocaine during spring training. How much of that money went up his nose toward his cocaine habit, nobody knows, but take away the drugs, arrests, and injuries and Dwight would have been considered one the greatest pitchers in MLB history. Less than 20 years later, the top pitchers in baseball today like C.C. Sabathia, Johan Santana, and Roy Halladay are all making over $20+ million a year. Must be nice!
Happy Birthday to...
- former and current NBA players, Mark Jackson (45), the Lopez twins, Brook and Robin (22)
