GUNNIN' FOR THAT #1 SPOT REVIEW

If you’re a Basketball junkie like me, then you need to check out Adam Yauch’s Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot. The documentary is about eight of the country’s best High School players and their journey to NY to play in the Elite 24 Basketball Game. Elite 24 is an outdoor Basketball game featuring the country’s 24 best players taking place at one of Basketball’s meccas,
The documentary itself follows Kevin Love, Brandon Jennings, Michael Beasley, Tyreke Evans, Donte Greene, Jerryd Bayless, Lance Stephenson, and Kyle Singler. I’m just quickly going to go through a couple of random tidbits I found interesting about every baller featured in this documentary…
Kevin Love:
- The documentary shows how Love was ranked #1 in his class. I noticed that the ranking didn't really seem to affect him at all.
- Also the doc talks about his father a little bit, Stan Love, who was a former NBA player. And about his Uncle, who is a member of the Beach boys. That lineage is probably why Love is pretty good at handling pressure.
-I knew Love was sick in HS, but I didn't know Love was a beast. It was sick when he shattered that backboard in the documentary.
-The documentary also shows him with a sick full court game winner, as well as a bunch of his nice full court passes he is famous for.
Donte Green:
- I had no clue that Green was born in Europe, Germany to be exact.
- Donte's mom passed away when he was 13. Going through the exact same thing in my life, I know how hard something like that can be for a person. That is why I'll always be rooting for him in the League and wish him all the best.
- Donte and his younger brother(who he calls Baby Shaq), were raised by his grandparents in Baltimore. They both seem like great individuals who worked hard to get Donte to where he is today.
Jerryd Bayless:
- Bayless definitely seems like a hard worker and someone who plays with a chip on his shoulder. They show him putting in work at the gym, but there is just something about him that seems like he wants to prove people who judge him wrong. People don't think he can be great because of his size, and he doesn't think that he gets enough publicity in Arizona, because Arizona isn't considered a famous High School Basketball area.
- Bayless is smooth, on and off the court. On the court, his game just looks naturally smooth and effortless. Off the court, they show him a little bit with the ladies, which is kind of cool too to see. It's funny that at the end of the day, they guys are all just regular guys.
- They show Bayless taking a yoga class, which I thought was pretty cool / different for a High School baller.- Bayless was one of the four best ballers at the big game.
Brandon Jennings:
-Jennings has this swagger about him. Personally, for me, his game was definitely the most fun to watch during this documentary. I thought he played the best out of everyone and dominated the big game.
-Jennings has a little brother that looks up to him.
-You could tell Jennings is a little out there. Even his AAU coach tells him to chill out and not mess around. Him and B-Easy definitely stick out, out of the eight. More on B-Easy to come.
Kyle Singler:
-The shot Singler hits when he is shooting around is sick.
-Who knew Singler was such an athlete. It seems like he plays every single sport in HS. I was definitely surprised and got to give him props.
-Kyle's family is pretty much composed of all athletes, so you can see where he gets his skills from.
-Again, Kyle's a lot more athletic then I thought he was. I'm a Duke hater, but I'm going to try to watch him play some more next year. This Kid does seem like he will be something special in the future.
Lance Stephenson:
-For being just 15 years old in the documentary, this kid is HUGE!
-Stephenson is already well known in NY since he is from Brooklyn. What's even crazier is that he is well known at Rucker at the age of 15!
-His game is pretty smooth already at that age. I wonder if his game will progress with his age though. It'll be fun to watch him play at Cinci next year.
Tyreke Evans:
-Evans' support system basically seems like it is composed of his brothers. One brother coached him growing up, and his other brother, named Pooh, seems like Evans' spokesperson. If you watch the documentary, you will know what I mean. haha.
-I find it interesting that Evans hasn't really played much streetball. At least that is what his brother said.
-Evans seems like a quiet kid who only cares about Basketball. He doesn't really talk much in the documentary. He kind of reminds me of Derrick Rose for that same reason. Both are PG's who don't talk much, but love Basketball and play hard.
Michael Beasley:
-B-Easy was my second favorite player to watch in this documentary. Like Jennings, he is kind of out there personality wise. In the end, there is no denying his game. His skill set is sick and highly unique.
-My favorite part of the documentary was definitely when B-Easy punks Donte and takes him baseline for a sweet layup.
-He loves to talk, and he is definitely entertaining to watch.
-I also just wanted to quickly say I hope this kid gets better soon with all that he has going on in his life right now. At the end of the day we have to remember that he is still just a kid. I hope he can get some good people around him to help him through these trying times. He's an amazing talent, and I hope he can bounce back from all this. I look forward to seeing him play in the League for years.
Overall, I thought this documentary was awesome! It was pretty cool getting an inside look at all of these guys, and it’s crazy in a way to see all of them at such a young age during the documentary. More than the game at Rucker itself, everything else that goes on behind the scenes in these players’ lives is what really fascinates me. Besides the Basketball aspect of it, that is actually my favorite part about this documentary.
We get to see how the Media itself and how these player rankings affect these players on and off the court. We also get to see just how big these player rankings and lists have become. I also loved how they showed those player rankings by class, because you know you have looked up and seen those exact same player rankings over the years!
I also loved how we get to see the business aspect of things. It is most prevalent in the documentary when they talk about the shoe companies. Shoe companies approaching players at the age of 8?!? That is insane to me, but hey the Sport Industry is a multi-billion dollar business, and companies can't take the chance of missing out on the next big thing!
I also thought some other little things shown were cool. Like how the players talked about coaches texting them (Tyreke in particular), or how the players talked about groupies (Bayless). Oh, and the soundtrack was tight too.
All these things are definitely why I loved this documentary and definitely recommend it. There’s not much I would actually change about the documentary itself other than maybe some of the game footage. In regards to the actual game that took place, I just think overall they could’ve come up with some better clips and highlights. Also, what was up with all that slow motion during the game? Most of the slow motion and double takes weren’t even needed, so I would have probably cut some of that out. But overall, that didn't ruin the documentary for me.
I guess one other thing I would’ve maybe changed was the number of ballers they followed. On one hand, following 8 different players is pretty cool and it shows you how each one is individually different and where they are coming from, but on the other hand, you can’t really get attached to any of the ballers in the movie because you don’t follow them for long enough. Just when you are getting to know one of the kids and falling in love with them or their game, their little segment is over. I guess what I’m trying to say is remember Hoop Dreams? How close were you to Gates and Agee at the end of that documentary? You felt like you practically knew them right? And how much did you feel for those two kids at the end of the documentary? I still to this day remember Gates and Agee, and would love to meet them in person to talk to them about Hoop Dreams and about their lives ever since.
In Gunnin’ maybe they could’ve followed 4 kids instead of 8, to take us a little closer into these kids’ lives. In the end, I don’t think that is direction they wanted to go in with this documentary, which is cool too, because again, it was still great. I think they went with 8 kids to just show star power, give us a broader view of the event itself and to show us what goes on behind the scenes. It was definitely a lighter documentary for the viewing audience than Hoop Dreams.
Anyways, those were just my random thoughts about the documentary. Be sure to check it out if you have some time, and please stop back and let me know what you guys think, or what your opinions are about it in the comments section…
Here’s an interview with Adam speaking about the documentary.

DERRICK ROSE ON THE COVER OF NBA 2K10: DRAFT COMBINE

Please God, do not let DRose get the dreaded video game curse. We just saw what happened to Kane after he got his. Not to mention, poor Rose already has my curses and jinxes working against him too. Again, please God take care of him...
2K Sports Press Release...
In NBA 2K10: Draft Combine, fans will begin their career at the ATTACK Athletics gym in Chicago by building their own custom player and working with a mentor, the 2K Insider, to step up their game through a variety of challenging basketball drills and 5-on-5 games to increase their NBA draft stock. The greater a player excels at a particular drill, or in completing specific game objectives, the more valuable skill points they will receive which can be used to improve one of over 30 key player attributes. Fans can then take their custom built players in NBA 2K10: Draft Combine and use them in the all-new My Player career mode in NBA 2K10 launching this fall, allowing them to continue their journey toward becoming an NBA legend.
Why they chose Derrick...
"Derrick is the perfect fit to be our spokesman for NBA 2K10: Draft Combine," said Greg Thomas, senior vice president of sports development for 2K. "Not only is he one of the most dynamic young playmakers in the NBA today, he's the pride of Chicago, where the real NBA Draft Combine is located. We look forward to working closely with Derrick this season, and are thrilled to offer our fans a brand new pre-season basketball experience with NBA 2K10: Draft Combine."

NIKE MAX LEBRON VII - CHICAGO SHOE
Check out these sweet kicks designed by Chicago artist Jeff Zimmermann...

Lebron James was in Chicago yesterday promoting his new Nike Max Lebron VII's, in conjunction with his new documentary coming out, called "More than a Game". And as part of the promotional tour, Lebron is also preaching community based activities, which is definitely great. Along with that, James Lebron will receive a custom pair of his shoes designed by a local artist, at each of the 10 stops on his World Tour. And that is where artist Jeff Zimmermann comes into the picture.
Zimmermann put his skills to work and designed the pair you see above. The shoes are pretty sick, so I had to post this.
Also, here is a little bit more behind how Zimmermann came up with the design itself...
"The shoes have a very bright, dynamic color to reflect this positive endeavor," Zimmermann said. "Beyond that, there's the Chicago flag and other Chicago motifs.
"It's sort of like a passage of a day. There's a dawn and abstract nighttime to represent the value of every day. Every day is a gift that we should take advantage of."
Zimmermann also featured an item closely associated with Chicago.
"There's a Chicago hot dog, our unique food source," he said. "It's also tongue in cheek about how it's fun to be a hot dog on the court."I sewed in some Nike swooshes from my old Nike cleats, along with some eight-year-old laces, falling apart. I wanted to put some used, worn-in Nike collages onto these Nikes to symbolize that practice and hard work get you to where you want to be. I wanted to use something from like used shoes from practice."
Zimmermann painted "fidelitas" across the front of both shoes.
"It's Latin meaning loyalty," he said. "Every city he's going to has a theme, and loyalty is one of them. For LeBron, it shows that he's loyal to where he came from.
"And lastly, it looks like he's been walking through gold, but raised up. It's like there are hidden risers below the shoes so they're floating in the air. That's after I did my homework on LeBron and saw how successful he is, and how despite all of his success, he rises above it and strives to achieve higher goals. That's the most important part.
- NOTE - I was not able to attend the event. I was able to get this information from a story featured on ESPNChicago today... Click Here to Read More..

CHICAGO BEARS FAMILY DAY/ PRACTICE - TWEETS/ THOUGHTS

I finally was able to make it out to a Bears practice this year, and I'm really glad I went, because it was a lot of fun. I went with my buddy Shijo, and we went to Saturday's practice, which also happened to be Family Day. It was crazy seeing close to 28,000 people show up for practice, but that just shows you how excited fans are for this upcoming season. From the getgo, it was clear that everyone came to see the man Jay Cutler play. And when it was all said and done, one thing was for sure, Cutler did not disappoint.
Here are my tweets/ some random thoughts from the practice I went too...
Tweets (twitter was all over the place over the weekend, I think some got lost)...
- At Soldier Field for Bears practice!
- Position Drills going on
- Tommie Harris not practicing
- Marinelli is definitely a vocal and demonstrative coach
- He's working the DLine
- Special teams time Hester just busted a punt
- Wolfe with a nice return
- Running drills
- Kevin Jones nice run. He looks in a lot betr shape.
- Forte looks great.
- Another nice run by Kevin Jones.
- Seven on seven time
- Cutler hits DH
- Cutler to Bennett
- Cutler to Rideau
- Cutler to Rashied
- Cutler to olsen
- Cutler to Rideau again
- wolfe with a nice run
- Wow sick bomb to rideau! My guy Rideau better get some tick
- Amazing pass. Rideau making some dope catches
- Cutler goes 6-6 in 7 on 7 drills.
- ten on ten
- first two passes complete
- cutler sweet pass to des, amazing throw
- cutler to hester, good again
- Hester with a dope block, forte nice run
- four for four, another Rideau catch
- Sick throw by cutler, nice catch by DA
- dump off to forte
- Another complete pass by Cutler to DA
- 2 minute drill amazing pass from cutler to DH to start it off
- incomplete
- cutler play action to mckie
- false start penalty, drive killer.
- incomplete, fg attempt coming up
- as good as gould!
- hanie struggling
- baz fumbles, backups not doing well
- Hanie hurting, missed a wide open Davis
- nice pass from Baz to Fakepete
- Hanie misses WR by five yards
- Baz way off
- Hanie throws a pick 6 on his first throw during the 2 minute drill
- this after I tell my buddy Shijo I bet he throws a pick, he is struggling
- practice over
- trying to get some autographs
- no luck, the place is a madhouse
- Cutler is king here. He is like a God...
Thoughts...
- Brandon Rideau and Devin Aromashodu (Cutler calls him D.A.) looked really good out there. I really hope both make the team and get their chances to shine. I've been on the Rideau bandwagon for years now, so LOVIE, LET THE KID PLAY!!!
- Kevin Jones looks amazing. He looks like the Kevin Jones of old. Forte looks awesome too. They might be monsters together. We need a nickname for this combo...
- Cutler put on a show. Dude went 6-6 in the 7 on 7 and finished 22 of 27 for the day. He made two amazing throws that I have never seen a Bears QB ever make. One was to Rideau and one was to Hester. He also moves really well in the pocket and has great footwork. He will definitely make these WR's better.
- The backups looked terrible. I'm a huge Hanie fan, but he struggled big time. I've read that he has had some good practices too, so I'm just hoping he had an off day. I am scared though after watching Hanie and Baz on Saturday. The Bears might be one hit away from picking top five in the NFL Draft next year. Let's hope not...
- Bowman did suit up. He ran around a little during the secondary drills but didn't play.
- Tommie Harris did not practice.
- Orlando Pace looked like he is in great shape. I got to see him up close after the practice, and the guy is huge. He's a BEAST.
- Chris Williams looks good out there, and he did really well out from what I saw of him.
- Briggs & Urlacher looked like their old selves. Urlacher definitely looks like he is in better shape this year.
- Izzy looks nice and Marcus H is enormous. He looks like a monster.
- Jay Cutler is like a God right now in Chicago. He can do no wrong. I can't even begin to explain the scene when Cutler came to the sidelines after the practice was over. It was insane.
I can't wait to see Saturday's pre season game, and I can't wait to go to Green Bay for the season opener. Go Bears!!!

JOHN WALL DUNKS ON JERRY STACKHOUSE
I know this is old news, but this juke and dunk by John Wall is just plain filthy. I had to post it...
They call Wall the next Derrick Rose, and if you have seen his YouTube mixes, you know exactly why they do. I'm excited to see him play at UK this year. I can't wait to see how good that squad will be...

DERRICK ROSE TO APPEAR IN GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY ADS

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is launching a public awareness campaign to celebrate its 30th anniversary of serving the hungry in the Chicago area. The focus - "Helping the Hungry for 30 Years" - is to thank those who have contributed to Chicago's food bank and raise awareness of the continuing need in Chicago and Cook County.
DRose will be one of many famous people that will be appearing in the ads for the GCFD. I'm glad they chose DRose as one of their representatives for this campaign. Hopefully having DRose as a rep will get some younger Chicagoans to go out and help the GCFD in any way they can, which includes volunteering. After going to this link, I for one will definitely be looking into helping out the GFCD in some way or another.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE DUNKER!
NBA fans, if you get a second, make sure you all check out the video above and check out Nba.com/dunk. The NBA and Sprite are asking us, the fans, to select 4 finalists to compete in the Dunk Contest at the NBA All-Star Game next year. I personally can't wait to see this new twist they have added. I think it will definitely breathe some life back into the Dunk Contest, which has pretty much flat lined since the VC dunk contest years ago. I just finished voting, so I hope my guy gets in.
Anyways, here's a little bit more information about the contest...
After weeks of dunk contests, ten semifinalists have been selected from among amateur dunkers across the U.S., and it is now up to the fans to select which four dunkers will go on to compete in the first-ever Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas, Texas.
Fans can visit NBA.com/dunk to watch dunks from each of the ten semifinalists and vote on who they think should be flown to NBA All-Star in February to compete for the chance to be crowned the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown Champion. The winner will receive a grand prize of $10,000 and will attend the Sprite Slam Dunk contest during NBA All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 13, 2010.
Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown competitions were held in eight cities during May, June, and July at NBA Nation presented by T-Mobile and Kia Motors, the league’s touring vehicle that transforms into a 20,000-square-foot basketball playground. The competitions were open to all local dunkers, ages 18 and up, who were able to show off their dunking skills before a panel of judges at NBA Nation. One winner from each of the eight cities was selected by the fans via SMS text voting.
Fans that could not attend the NBA Nation stops were able log on to NBA.com/dunk to upload videos showcasing the best dunks. LeBron James led a panel of judges that picked two winners from among the online entries. The eight local winners from the tour combined with the two online winners to make up the group of 10 semifinalists, and now fans are being asked to narrow the group to four best-of-the-best finalists. The voting period begins today and runs through August 24, 2009.
