Now before you start riding on me because you read the title, check out what this post is about. The Bears will win if they can do these following things in tonight's game...
- Pressure Manning. This is probably the most important thing on the defensive side of the ball tonight. The Bears need to take advantage of this make shift offensive line by generating pressure from their Front Four. Having Jeff Saturday out is huge for the Bears, and we need to take advantage of that since Manning will be working with a completely new Center for the first time in Live action. The Bears might also want to do something they did not do much of last year, and that is use blitzes and stunts in this one to get to Manning.
- Have a nice game from the OLINE - This is one of the biggest question marks about this team. Will the OLINE be able to protect the QB and open up some holes for our RB's? No one knows for sure, but if the Bears want to win tonight, this is going to be one of the main things that decides the game. It's time for John St. Clair and Beekman and some others to prove their worth tonight on the field. If they can do this, then that leads me to my next point...
- Run the Ball. For a team that "comes off the bus running", they really don't run the ball much. Forte needs to get the ball 20 plus times today, whether it be by hand offs, or on short passes. And then after he is done, we need to run the ball some more with Kevin Jones and pound it down their throat in the second half of the football game. They need to control the game by running the ball and by running the ball into a weaker run defense (my opinion), we can really rest our defense during the game and get a couple of scores towards the end of the game.
- Stretch the field. I know no one thinks Kyle Orton can throw the ball over ten yards, but he needs to in this one. Yes he needs to be a good "game manager", but they also need to take a couple of chances down the field. They need to do this to try to open up the middle of the field and the running game for the Bears. This will mean getting Hester, G-Reg and Lloyd involved in the passing game as well. Try to utilize their strengths and put them into good positions to make plays on this Colts defense.
-Generate turnovers /limit our own and tackle better. If we can win the turnover battle, the Bears will definitely have a chance to win this game. That means Kyle Orton will need to do what he does. Be a smart QB that doesn't commit turnovers. If we want to's, we can bring Sexy back off the bench. We also need to do what our defense does, and that is generate some turnovers. We also need to tackle a lot better this season and in this game if we want to win. Everyone on the Defense got paid in this off season, so they need to prove that they are still their old selves and play like the Pro Bowlers they once were. It's put up or shut up time for the defense.
- Win the special teams phase of the game. The Bears have a superior Special Teams, and the Colts just don't. Their ST's is pretty bad, and the Bears need to take advantage of it. Even if they do not kick or punt to Hester, the other returners need to step up and get our Offense some good field position. Our Special Teams needs to impact this game in a huge way, whether that means blocking a punt or a kick, Robbie Gould making all his FG attempts, or taking one to the house, we need them to dominate and uphold their end of the bargain.
- Limit penalties. If you are a Bears fan and you watched every game last year, you know what I'm talking about. We committed tons of bone-headed, inexcusable penalties, and we just can not afford that this season. I'm hoping Lovie addressed that during the off season, so let's see how that plays out tonight and throughout the season.
- Limit injuries. Injuries happen in the NFL, that is just apart of the game. But if the Bears can limit their injuries in this game and during the season, they definitely have a chance to do well just like any other team in the game. For tonight's game we need Dusty D, Tommie Harris, and Mike Brown out there, injury free if we want to win. I say this because I was at the Bears Chargers game last year where in the first half our defense was playing an amazing game. Then Dusty D and Mike Brown went down, and it was all downhill from there. The Bears unfortunately just do not have great depth on our team, especially on defense, so we can't afford any of our big names going down.
Call me crazy, but I really think that if the Bears can do some of these things listed above, they will win tonight's game. GO BEARS!!!
