Deng and the Bulls finalized his deal today. Deng and the Bulls agreed with 6 years, 71 million. Deng also has some incentives in his deal, if reached, he can make up to 80 million dollars total, during the span of his contract.
It is slightly more than I personally wanted to give Deng, but overall it is not a bad deal. He is going to be making 11.83 million dollars a season, and if you put it into perspective, that is less than even E. Okafor from the Bobcats and is in the range of all the other players selected in his Draft class that have gotten extensions. Deng is still only 23 years old, is a very good all around basketball player(probably the best we have), and still has a world of potential to uncover. The Bulls will have him locked up for the prime of his career as well, which is good news for us Bulls fans, if he turns out to be the player we all think he can be. Hopefully last year was an aberration for Deng and the Bulls, and he can have a great season this year.
Here was Deng's reaction on the deal...
"This brings a lot of responsibilities," Deng said. "I take basketball very seriously and I look forward to putting the team on my shoulders and getting back to the great days of Bulls basketball.
"It also brings great responsibilities off the court. My community commitment is something I take very seriously. My community work here in Chicago and all around the world is something I look forward to doing."
Now the big question is what will happen to BGeezy, and what will happen with his contract? It doesn't look like anything will be done soon in regards to a long term deal for him, but there is still a lot of time until the season starts, so let's see what happens.
Check out this KC Johnson article about the Deng signing if you get a chance. He does a great job of explaining why this agreement was great for both parties.
