The Brew Crew made big news today in baseball when they traded for former Indians Pitcher, CC Sabathia.
They are definitely going for it all this year, and you can't blame them. Their young, solid nucleus is finally gelling and hitting better, and as bad as they started, they are only 3.5 games behind the Cubs. Now that is a little scary for us Cubs fans.
By coupling CC with Ben Sheets, I'd say the Brewers now have a top 3 1-2 pitching punch in the NL, next to the DBacks and the Cubs.
Overall, I think it was a good deal for both teams because the Indians had to get something in return for CC before he bolts for the Red Sox or Yanks next year, and they did in Prospect Matt LaPorta. He was definitely the prize of the deal for the Indians. For the Brewers, they probably won't sign CC after this season(money issues), but they gave up a prospect for a position in which they have depth, and they get CC to help them make a run for the second half of the season. Him and Ben Sheets together are definitely going to be a nasty back to back connection, and that can mean trouble for the Cubbies as well as the other teams in the NL in the second half of the season..
As I've been saying all year long, the Brew Crew are the team to look out for in the NL Central. While the Cards have played awesome this year, I think they will eventually fade. The Brew Crew have the overall better baseball team. They have some great hitters, and now some great pitchers. It will be interesting to see how CC does in the NL and also to see if Ben Sheets can finally stay healthy for an entire season. When it is all said and done, they will be the team gunning for that number 1 spot in the NL Central towards the end of the season. I think ultimately the Brewers will get the NL Wild Card, and the Cubbies will win the division, but let's see how it goes.
The Cubs are also possibly looking to counter this deal with a deal of their own. They are looking at the A's Rich Harden, who is a pretty solid pitcher himself.
Anyways, you can read about the four prospects the Indians got, as well as what Baseball America thinks about the trade here.
