I have seen so much police brutality and corruption in my life that I automatically believe anyone who says they were treated poorly no matter how outlandish their claims are. I went to Umass Amherst from 2001-2005 when the school developed a reputation for uncontrolled student riots. I was present for each and every one of the so called riots. The school has a huge student population and it was common for parties to gather thousands of students. The parties never became “riots” until the Umass and Amherst police officers showed up. Their method of breaking up these huge parties consisted of opening fire with pepperball guns and wild swinging of police batons. I personally witnessed my friend fall down as we tried to run from the pepperball fire, as he lay on the ground three officers came up and started kicking him as he lay on the ground. Completely unprovoked and I regret to this day that we didn’t have a videocamera with us. On the corruption side of things it was common for police to search drunk students for drugs without probable cause and then pressure them to become informants if drugs were found. Maybe there are good cops out there but I have yet to come across one. They do what they want because they know most students don’t want to tell their parents about getting arrested and can’t afford lawyers to fight the charges.
