BEARS 1st Round Pick - Chris Williams

For the next few days we will be trying our best here at Docksquad's Sports to give you our analysis on each of the 12 Chicago Bear's Draft picks from this past weekend. We will give you some clips you can watch, and a breakdown on each player for your knowledge. Hopefully this turns out to be a great draft class for our Chicago Bears!

Our first pick in the 2008 draft was OT Chris Williams from Vanderbilt University.

In our opinion, this was a great first round draft pick for the Chicago Bears. By picking Williams, we plugged two holes on our offensive line with just one move. With the pick of Williams, he will start at his natural position of left tackle and we will then move John Tait to his natural position, of Right tackle. With Williams, we now have two solid book ends on our offensive line. This is huge for us in a division with great DE's like Gb's Kampman and KGB, and now Jared Allen of the Vikings.

Now some people might argue that the Bears should have possibly taken Pitt's Otah, or Virginia's Albert. In our opinion, and many others, both of them are projects that will take some time to develop, where you can start Williams right away next year at Left tackle, because he is that polished. Both are also projected to possibly be better guards, or RT's, than LT's.

Another pick fans wanted here was Chi town's own R Mendenhall. Although I love Mendenhall personally, and think he is going to be solid, I think the Bears went the right way with OL here. Without an OLine, you can't run or throw the ball, and we saw that first hand last year. The best teams are built from the inside out, so this was a nice pick here.

Pros:

Chris is left handed, has great feet, great technique, and is known for being one of the smartest Football players out there. All these tools are perfect for a starting LT, and hopefully Chris starts at left tackle for years to come.

He is also one of the best blockers against the pass in all of College Football. He gave up a total of 2 sacks in 2 entire years, playing in the stacked SEC. The SEC, known for its speed and great talent, has some great Dlineman. Williams more than held his own vs these great athletes, and that is one of the main things the Bears loved about him when they watched his film.

Another plus was that he also did not miss a game in all of his college career, putting to rest durability questions.

Off the field, Chris has never had any problems, and has been said to be a great person, on and off the field.

Cons:

There are only two cons when reading and watching film on Chris. The knocks on Chris are that his run blocking isn't as good as it can be, and his overall strength. We think both of these things go hand and hand, and the Bears will definitely bulk him up and increase his strength and durability. They say his mechanics are flawless, so this will definitely help in the long run when it comes to improving his run blocking. Don't get us wrong, it's not like Chris can not hold his own against Dlineman, again the SEC has some of the best Dlineman in the country, and he did fine. It's just that if there is some room for improvement for Chris, it is in those two main areas.
